daikanyama 代官山 だいかんやま

daikanyama is a trendy shopping area near shibuya in tokyo. it has more small shops with a cute and independant vibe, and some nice cafes. from daikanyama, it's possible to walk to shibuya in about a half an hour, just follow along the train tracks for a glimpse into a little quieter area of tokyo.

kamawanu tenugui shop

this little shop in a quiet corner of daikanyama has some of the most beautiful tenugui designs. the store's name is kamawanu, (japanese website here), and their towels and postcard books of their designs can be found in stores all over japan. but if you love tenugui towels and are in tokyo, it's probably worth a trip to visit this store.

here's a detail map showing the location of the shop behind the little post office on the corner.

shibuya 渋谷(しぶや)

shibuya is one of the most busy and bustling parts of tokyo. for an impressive view of the crush, take the hachiko exit from shibuya station.  the statue of hachiko the loyal dog is a popular meeting point near shibuya station. cross the plaza, and from the starbucks on the other side of the intersection you can have a great view of the scramble crossing.

there are many shops in shibuya, including the largest tokyu hands in tokyo.

yuzawaya ユザワヤ

hours: 10:00〜19:00

access: JR ・東急蒲田駅 南口 south exit from JR Kamata Station

yuzawaya is a national chain of craft stores. the main store, in kamata, tokyo, is the largest, with 8 multistory buildings (!) of craft supplies. kamata is a little far away from central tokyo, but it's worth the trip. and yuzawaya is very close to the train station.

yuzawaya kamata branch website (in japanese).
